Though Murrells Inlet, SC was not officially named Murrells Inlet until 1913, many believe the history of the little seaside town goes back way before the official naming. Native Americans first set foot on the land, closely followed by the 16th Century Spanish Explorers and English Colonists in the 17th Century. By the 1700’s & 1800’s the land now known as Murrells Inlet, SC had become flourishing with rice plantations. According to MurrelsInletSC.com, by 1850 almost 47 million pounds of rice were produced in the area we now call Murrells Inlet. In 1863, The Civil War came to the shores of modern day Murrells Inlet causing a decline in the number of rice plantations. By the early 1900s, rice plantaions became almost non-existent and soon there after would go out of business. Since then, Murrells Inlet has transitioned into flourishing fishermen’s village (notably named South Carolina's seafood capital) and a tourist and retirement destination full of rich history and natural beauty. Murrells Inlet, SC is a great place to kick back, put your feet up, enjoy nature, and simply put – enjoy life.
